Ernő Király est né le 16 mars 1919 à Szabadka, en Yougoslavie. Sa carrière de compositeur commence après la seconde guerre mondiale, dans une aire géographique dominée par la dictature soviétique, fermant hermétiquement la région à toute pensée et expérience artistique de l’Europe de l’Ouest. Les habitudes créatrices de Ernő Király rejoignent plutôt la conception de l’avant garde américaine (improvisation, construction d’instrument, pratiques mêlées compositeurs-interprètes, multi-instrumentalisme) que la pratique de composition de l’école Européenne figée en dogme.
Il a commencé des études d’histoire des instruments de musique et publié une étude sur son instrument préféré : la cithare. Király a découvert l’effet euphorisant de la pureté, de la rudesse de l’univers sonore de la musique populaire car à l’époque, cette couche, véritablement authentique était occulté par la chanson composée et la musique Tzigane style pompier. C’est également dans les années cinquante qu’il fait connaissance avec la musique électronique et en grande partie sous l’influence de Pierre Schaeffer, il commence des expériences de manipulation avec des bandes magnétiques. A cette même période il conçoit l’idée de base de la synthèse des deux mondes musicaux. Dans le morceau intitulé « Etude II », il utilise la bande magnétique pour manipuler les sons d’un orchestre de percussions.

Ernő Király was born on March 16th 1919 in Szabadka, Yugoslavia .His career as a composer began after the Second World War, in a region under Soviet domination hermetically sealed off from the ideas and experiences of Western Europe. Kiràly’s creative method has more in common with the American avant-garde (improvisation, instrument building, mixing composers and performers, multi-instrumentalism) than with dogmatically rigid European compositional practice.
He began studying the history of musical instruments and published a study on his favourite: the zither. He discovered both the euphoric purity and the raw sound world of folk music – at the time, this authentic strain of music was nearly eclipsed by composed songs and conventional gypsy music. Also in the fifties he became aware of electronic music, and, influenced by Pierre Schaeffer, starting experimenting with magnetic tapes. At the same time he began to imagine a possible synthesis of these two musical worlds – in «Etude II» he used tape to transform the sound of an orchestra of drums. He also became increasingly interested in improvisation.
