about

Man Ray parle des objets. Collectage de chanson française, 1913. Collectage musique des Indiens d’Amérique, 1937. Marcel Duchamp, Guy Debord…

The phonograph is the original big bang, the lost horizon of the sound document. this sedimentation, regarding the medium, imples a form of time travel and questions in a unique way the relation between sound and meaning. The sound document is hazardous, fragile, rare, historical, it is also full of background noise, A symptom of its technological form of expression. In that way it can brake into music with a low profile power of evocation: playing with the juxtaposition of temporalities, A musical transformation of the original event, the passage from speaking to singing voice, and without doubt many others configurations may be present.
12 musicians start off with the same sound basis, some bring their own documentary source, and then each one proposes a departure towards a « new noise » as Rimbaud had, in his time, suggested. borrowings, quotation, cut up, sampling, words, all participate: but no one element determines the multiplicity of the images, even if we can sometimes hear the same document in the heart of various propositions.
Some sources: Mao Zedong proclaiming the founding of the People’s Republic of China. A police intervention in Paris suburbs. Jacques Lacan talk about unconscious. Daisy, first song interpreted by a computer. Man Ray talk about objects. Collected French son, 1913. Collected music of the American Indians, 1937. Marcel Duchamp, Guy Debord…
